Home buying is an exciting time…and also a seemingly endless stream of inspections, paperwork, and negotiations. When you’re near to closing on that dream home, the last thing you want to do is get bogged down with a bunch of unnecessary inspections.

Sewer inspections are often on the chopping block for buyers eager to move in. Who wants to spend a bunch of money and delay a sale for something you don’t need. But do you need it?

Is a sewer inspection really necessary, or is it a bunch of  ???? ?

Reasons Why You Should Have a Sewer Inspection

  • The house is older than 15 yearsThere are plenty of things that get better with age, but your septic system ain’t one of ‘em. Especially if the house is 30+ years old, the pipes may be made out of less-durable materials like concrete. A sewer scope inspection can take a peek and make sure it’s all running smooth.
  • There are a lot of trees in the yardQuestion: what’s one of the top causes of sewer line problems? Well, you probably already guessed it’s trees based on the title. Over time, as tree roots grow they can inch closer and closer to your pipes and slip through little cracks. If the yard has a lot of trees, you don’t want to leaf anything to chance.
  • The drains are slooowwwA slow drain doesn’t mean the main line is backed up, but if it’s multiple drains…well, that’s worth looking into. If you actually have sewage coming back up after flushing or draining, that’s a more obvious sign something is wrong.

So DO you need a sewer inspection? I would say it’s worth making sure the main line is up to snuff instead of potentially running into a much more costly problem down the line.

I’m just sayin’
